obama comes across as a slight silliness, as the you're likable enough, hillary, line. governor romney, when she prepared and on case, he can be quite effective and disciplined in saying here's what i want to do, here's why you're wrong, here's where i'm going to do a better job. where he gets into trouble is when something comes out of left field that he hasn't really prepared for. >> this is the moment that the challenger has some advantage because it's the first time you've seen him on the stage with the president. >> yes, historically, that's been the case, because when you think about it, a president never stands as an equal with another american citizen except during these debates, and for all that we read and psych out the race and say it may be opening up now, there still is this undeniable drama, seeing these people in the same room, face to face what are they going to do in 90 minutes? so the challenger often gets a boost just by being there. >> you went back and looked at some 30 hours of debates. i thought one of the most interesting points that you made was that you can ac

at this widening gap, is president obama winning, or is governor romney losing. >> it obviously has to be a combination of both, but it's very easy for someone's perceptions to be destroyed if they don't know anything about you. what we have done in some of the swing states, they don't know what bane capital actually does. when you have that little knowledge, it makes the regulartive attacks effective. >> i spent a lot of time last night speaking to democrats and republicans myself to see what's going on. this 47% add, that secret video, the obama team is running it just in ohio. now they have gone out in seven other swing states with it. republicans i talked to acknowledges it's working. and that's why we see these numbers in ohio stretching out. what does romney do now? we see this morning he has a new ad where he is speaking to the camera for 60 seconds, but is it too late? >> the reason that 47% is working is because it's new information. we don't want to hear the same thing over and over again. voters pay attention to it. >> look at this ad. for the first time romney is speakin

.b., thank you. >> thank you, charlie and nora. >>> both president obama and governor mitt romney will be there. recent polls in virginia show the president with a slight edge, but in two of the battleground states ohio and florida, the latest cbs news poll shows romney falling behind. as jan crawford reports, some are calling for their cashed at to pick up the pace. jan? >> that's right. conservatives are starting to get anxious when they look at some of those polls. i didn't pick up any of that. i did an interview with romney and none of that was measured and he skipped several chances to land blows and he said he had harsh words for the president, but he said i'm not going to play that game. >> this is a campaign not about character assassination, even though that's what's come from the obama camp by and large. >> character assassination. ? >> yea. >> has the obama kampen gauged in character assassination. >> they tried to completely misrepresent my point of view and the american people are interested in who will make their lives better. >> reporter: romney supporters are implo

place. >>> i'm charlie rose with gayle king and norah o'donnell. this morning president obama and governor mitt romney are preparing for tomorrow night's first debate in denver. a new national poll shows the president has a four-point advantage going into this head-to-head matchup. it will focus on the economy and domestic issues. jan crawford is in denver this morning. >> reporter: both romney and the president have no more big campaign events before tomorrow night's debate. last night romney had a rally before more than 5,000 people. he picked up the endorsement of broncos legend john elway. there are less than 10% of voters who say they're undecided, they could change their mind. romney's challenge is to show why his proposals will make their life better and why the president doesn't deserve another chance. there was an interesting group last week in ohio with voters who packed the president in 2008 but aren't sold this time. it shows some think the president isn't to blame for the economy. they also don't know much good about romney thanks to the negative ads romney's camp

romney, he's a good debater. i'm just okay. >> governor romney, president obama gearing up for their first presidential debate on wednesday. >> i don't think one of them is going to make or break this campaign. >> thursday morning we're all going to be scratching our heads and saying, wow, we have a barn burner now for the next 33 days. >> maria asked you, why didn't you tell me? what did you say? >> that i did not know how to. >> the thing that really meant the most to me kind of fell apart because of my doing. i will always look back and say, how could you have done that? >> in japan, the powerful and destructive typhoon capture on tape by an american marine. >> holy [ bleep ]. >> lindsay lohan reportedly recovering from a scuffle with a man over photos he took of her on his cell phone. >> we're told the deer wasn't injured and the skateboarder is probably still eating some dust. >> no, no! down! >> he just pile drives donald jones. >> touchdown! does his dance. >> and all that matters. >> the european staged an epic comeback to win the ryder cup. >> on "cbs this morning.

are that ally. >> very interesting interview, charlie. we should also note this morning, governor mitt romney is attacking president obama's foreign policy record at a campaign rally in colorado. romney said america needs a president who will shape events and not be at their mercy. jan crawford is in denver. jan, what happened to the reset that the romney campaign said they were going to do talking about economy and jobs? instead it seems like they're talking about foreign policy. >> reporter: right. it was foreign policy yesterday. although, romney has said he's going to be drawing a sharper contrast with the president. we sure saw that here in denver. he hit the president hard for saying recent events in the middle east were bumps in the road. he also criticized the administration's response to those attacks in libya. >> the world looks at the events going on. they don't see these events as bumps in the road. these are lives. this is humanity. this is freedom. >> reporter: campaigning in colorado, romney was referring to comments the president made to "60 minutes," when he said recent event
